14 Jan AStA achieves significant improvement in rental bike conditions
The terms of the contract between the AStA of the University of Duisburg-Essen and the Nextbike rental bicycle system have improved considerably. From now on, students throughout NRW can rent two bikes at the same time. Previously, free rentals were only possible for one bicycle at a time in the Metropolrad-Ruhr area. With these changes, Nextbike is responding to the demands of the student council. All students of the University of Duisburg-Essen registered as “Ersthörer*innen” can use this offer.
AStA Representative for Ecology and Mobility Carlotta Behle is pleased about the changes in the contract: “Students who are visited by friends who are not studying at our university benefit the most from the new possibility of renting a second bicycle. The “Mitnahmeoption” (which means your Semesterticket is valid for another person travelling with you during certain times) for the VRR Semesterticket has been available for a long time already. We are therefore pleased that we now have a similar arrangement for the Nextbike contract – throughout NRW.”
The possibility of borrowing bikes free of charge anywhere in NRW greatly improves student mobility. The bikes are not only an addition to the public transport by train or bus but are also frequently used by students in their free time. Bonn is a small exception to the new regulation: Students of the University of Duisburg-Essen, who would like to rent Nextbike bikes there, have to pay 3€ per year. This amount will be withdrawn in the Nextbike-App in Bonn in the usual way. Afterwards, the rental in Bonn is free of charge for the next 365 days.
The second change in the contract concerns the number of bikes available free of charge: From now on, two bikes can be borrowed at the same time free of charge instead of just one. At the end of the first free 60 minutes, the normal Nextbike rate of 50 cents for thirty minutes for each bike applies. It is still possible to make use of the 60 free minutes several times a day as long as the bike is returned to a Nextbike station in the meantime, at least for a short time.
